The Reasons behind Smoking Bans in Arizona Rentals

Many property management agencies have begun to enact smoking bans on their rental properties. These bans are not necessarily popular with some residents, and questions may arise about why they have been put in place. To justify the outlawing of smoking in their rentals, some associates in property management in Mesa, AZ may point to the following reasons.

  • Smoking is a fire hazard - Every year, hundreds of rental homes burn down due to errant cigarettes. Fires can also get started in the yards, because a smoker tossed a lit cigarette out of a window into some dry landscaping debris. In order to prevent these catastrophes from befalling their rentals, many management companies have restricted smoking to certain areas on their properties, or banned it entirely.
  • Smoking leaves behind a mess - Rental homes that have had smokers living in them for years can be a real chore to clean up. The surfaces may be coated with sticky nicotine residue, and the carpeting may have burns and stains from cigarette ash being worked into it. The damage from the smoking may be so extensive that the walls have to be repainted, and the carpeting has to be replaced.
  • Smoking bothers the other residents - Many non-smoking residents may live in a rental building, and they might like to enjoy their outdoor spaces and fresh air. They do not like it when they have to go inside and close their windows, because someone else wants to sit outside and smoke. If these residents are cancer survivors, or have other medical ailments, they may feel especially violated, and begin filing petitions with the property management company.
